This imposing building is reminiscent of the Escorial Monastery in Spain but is even larger.
It measures 213 by 244 m and the palace, basilica and convent have a total of 860 rooms. It was built in the first half of the 18th century by King João V, during one of the most glorious periods of Portuguese history.
The convent is famous for its huge and beautiful library and for the basilica with its marble walls, bas-reliefs and sculptures, some of which date back to the 16th century.
The basilica is also renowned for the magnificent sound of its bells. With 57 bells in each tower, this is one of the largest carillons in the world.
