Trips by car in Monumental Lisbon

Just a few kilometres from the city of Lisboa, the Estoril Coast allows you to discover all the capital’s treasures in a day trip by car.

To reach Lisboa you can take the direct route via the A5 motorway or enjoy the beautiful scenery along the EN6 coastal road. It is recommended you take this route outside rush hour, after 10.30am and before 6pm.

Belém Tower

This route takes you directly to the historic area of Belém with its strong links to the period of the Portuguese Discoveries. In this emblematic district you will find unique monuments such as the Belém Tower, the Discoveries Monument with its famous compass rose and the magnificent Jerónimos monastery. Also worth visiting are the Belém Cultural Centre, the Maritime Museum, the renovated Coach Museum and S. Bento Palace where the Presidential Museum is housed.

Pastéis de Belém

While you’re here, don’t forget to sample the famous “pastéis de Belém” (custard tarts) whose recipe is one of the best kept secrets of Portuguese confectionary. To become acquainted with the other attractions of the Portuguese capital, head for the old part of the city.

Saint George’s Castle

Enjoy the view of Lisboa from the top of Saint George’s castle, and explore the medieval alleyways of Alfama, Costa de Castelo and Mouraria. Wander along Rossio Square and stroll down the geometric of the Baixa as far as Praça do Comercio, facing the Tagus river.

Climb to the Chiado where you can enjoy elegant shops, theatres, bookstores and cafés. You can also discover the bohemian atmosphere of Bairro Alto. A day’s trip with still a lot more to see.
